Run Away 03:00
I don't know how it got so bad Just go and cancel all my plans 'Cause every time I'm feeling sad Oh I feel like dancing in the sand It's not that I want to run away No I just don't know how I can stay Cause when I see reasons I see none So I'm going dancing in the sun -Scat section- If I don't know where I'm gonna go The better I'll feel once I think I'm done 'Cause I'm already lost inside my thoughts So why not get lost while I'm in the sun? Why not get lost while I'm in the sun? Why not get lost in the sun?

Sleep Alone 04:14
You’ve been gone for so long I’ve forgotten what your face looks like What it feels like Your words still seared into my ears From a long awaited, too short phone call “I’ll see you soon, I’ll feel you soon” ‘Cause we’re not meant to sleep alone I’ll call your name out ’til you phone And tell me one last time You’re coming home You’re coming home And when you left you said you’d be Happier than you or me could ever dream I disagree ‘Cause you and I we’ve come so far Since laughing like we owned the bar And being asked to leave As they put out the sugar for the morning coffee No we’re not meant to sleep alone I’ll call your name out ’til you phone And tell me one more time That you’re not coming home That you’re not coming home ‘Cause your home seems to move Every time you come near And right now it feels So far from here I think I might have disappeared And then I felt it Coming whether I wanted it or not This lonely feeling This lonely feeling That you’re not coming home Oh I had no place so close to your heart But let me down easy before you depart No we’re not meant to sleep alone So hold on tight And don’t let go
3.
You fell into me And I didn’t know what to do ‘Cause you fell into me And I fell backwards too But now I know how it feels To fall in love with you And now I know how it feels And I hope that you know too ‘Cause I’ve never felt this way About anyone else When you fell into me I didn’t know what to say ‘Cause you fell into me And you swept me away But now I know how it feels To have a jelly to my peanut butter And now I know how it feels To have my heart develop a stutter ‘Cause I’ve never felt this way About anyone else
4.
Touch 04:24
I can stand on the shoulders of giants Make myself reliant on making people defiant But that’s the way the world came Packed with rebels and heretics, It’s all the same So you can keep on running your charade While I keep on running and gunning in my parade It doesn’t have to make you feel good It just doesn’t have to wreck everyone else’s mood But I had things to do that never got done It doesn’t matter now, if I’m having fun The trees don’t lie, they don’t steal or cheat But a tree can’t change the world That’s how we got them beat ‘Cause I came here to talk, But I spent twice as much time listening, yeah And when does love Begin to wash away the things that we all fear And what does it matter, Now that all I have is this buzzing in my ear Oh, ‘cause I came here to talk, But I spent twice as much time listening, yeah When I’m ready I’ll attack the words, Give it everything I’ve got But what’s left is fool’s gold There’s more that it’s not It ain’t nothing but a pretty colour, And even that could be fuller Came out as a caterpillar Went in as a Rockefeller But I had things to do that never got done It doesn’t matter now, if I’m having fun The trees don’t lie, they don’t steal or cheat But a tree can’t change the world That’s how we got them beat ‘Cause I came here to talk, But I spent twice as much time listening, yeah And when does love Begin to wash away the things that we all fear And what does it matter, Now that all I have is this buzzing in my ear Oh, ‘cause I came here to talk, But I spent twice as much time listening, yeah -Ooh-oh section- And when does love Begin to wash away the things that we all fear And what does it matter, Now that all I have is this buzzing in my ear Oh, ‘cause I came here to talk, But I spent twice as much time listening These oblong thoughts come easily Stretching my field of view What’s hard is when it means nothing Or something I already knew.

about

Scalawag’s genre spanning 4-track “Runaway” EP holds many different homages to the songwriter’s influences. From the indie-pop/R&B infused ‘Run Away,’ inspired by the chillwave movement of the late 2000s to the rockabilly ‘Touch,’ inspired by early blues and rockabilly songs of the mid 20th century. The arrangement and lyrical clarity of ‘You On My Mind’ lets you reminisce of classic 60s pop love songs, while enjoying a modern Pheobe Bridgers-esque folky atmospheric quality. Scalawag’s varied influences and musical background lend the EP a complexity in the compositions, while still giving the songs direction in their clear and simple arrangements.

‘Runaway’ Follows Scalawag’s late 2020 single ‘Touch’ (Reviewed “The silky smooth articulation...We are in love!” -Tonemill, and “Touch is funky, dynamic, and highly danceable it’s almost insane! -Where the Music Meets), and early 2021 single ‘You On My Mind’ (“There is a wonderful warmth to the music that gives you that burning ember of affection that shines in the lyrics.” -The Other Side Reviews.)

"It’s important to me that I create as many of the sounds myself as possible, instead of using stock instruments or samples” says Teo Saefkow, AKA Scalawag, who recorded the songs entirely in his home studio. “It gives every sound more weight and sanctity, to know that it took blood, sweat and tears to get a good performance out of myself for every instrument, and to make sure everything is sounding up to par and comparable to a studio recording with session musicians and engineers.”
Scalawag began production of the EP in May of 2020, at the height of the lockdown, when anxiety was mounting for the artist. “I felt a crushing weight on my soul, and everywhere I looked I felt powerless to help. I was just stuck in my home while people were out in the world suffering. I decided to put my head down and write as much music as possible, and I had an explosion of creativity. I ended up writing and finishing something like 7 songs in one month.” Runaway is the first of two EPs slated for release this year in the run-up to a full-length album set to release in the early summer of 2022.

The EP’s structure is no accident. Opening on the titular track, It tells the story of someone who needs to get away from their daily routine in order to clear their head. But, by doing so they leave their loved ones behind, and it begins to tug at their soul in the song ‘Sleep Alone.’ After coming home to connect back to their love in ‘You On My Mind,’ the overthinking creeps it’s way back, and the struggle with self-identity apparent in ‘Touch’ presses the singer to recognize that no matter what they do, they’re going to be forever trapped in the cycle of self-doubt and overthinking. The cycle resets and they decide to run away in order to clear their head.

Scalawag’s first EP after his debut album in 2019 captures that cycle of anxiety and self-doubt, while still pushing towards a new, more energetic direction for the solo artist.
